ORNITHOPTERS & FLYING MACHINES

A lifelong interest in flying things had Kevan designing and flying his own designs by the age of 12 years. The ornithopter has always been a favorite challenge. Kevan built one of the world’s first ultra-light aircraft in 1975. It started as a powered hang-glider but quickly evolved into something illegal! By putting on wheels, a rigid seat, rudder pedals and a joystick, he broke several Ministry of Transport bylaws and created the first ultra-light aircraft. As the rules and weight restrictions were replaced over the years, his airplane grew and evolved. It’s 110cc rotary engine became a 440cc two-stroke twin, and a pair of water floats replaced the hang-glider wheels.
