PEDAL CARS
THE ALEXIS PEDAL CAR
When Leycraft’s daughter Alexis was twelve years old, she asked her father for a car! After the laughter died down, he realized it was not an unreasonable request and promised to look into the matter. It took two years of hobby time to produce the ‘Alexis’, a two-people-powered, side-by-side pedal car that was exactly what she wanted! At fourteen, she was the only kid in her class driving on the street, although the bicycle paths proved to be way more fun and not nearly as dangerous! It is one of the only cars in the world that can run on Gatorade!
THE ZOMOBILE
The Waldorf School requires all Grade 8 students to commit to a year-long project of their own choosing. Leycraft’s stepdaughter Zoe was inspired by a couple of his human-powered vehicles and decided she would design one herself. Her drawings showed a three-wheeled machine with two in front for steering and the driven wheel behind. She learned to use all manner of power tools from drills and saws to welders and grinders. It took almost the entire school year to complete but she got it done in time and has had a lot of fun with it ever since. She has driven it in parades and at street festivals. She has seen herself driving it on television, in the newspapers and on the Internet and it is a continuing source of pride for her and her mentor!
THE FLOMOBILE
This is another of Leycraft’s designs that evolved slowly over a couple decades! It started out as a three-wheeled device to help his son learn to walk! Once he had that handled, he turned it around and it became an oversized tricycle that would allow Charlie to drive his little friends around the neighbourhood! Many years later, it would catch the eye of the organizer of the Bow River Flow street festival. They sponsored a new cover for it and it became the famous Flomobile, star of the festival, newspapers and the small screen!
